How strikethrough text works
The generator adds a combining character after every letter and space. A combining character is drawn on top of the character before it instead of taking its own space. The strikethrough style uses U+0336 COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY, which draws a line through the middle. The underline style uses U+0332 COMBINING LOW LINE, which draws a line under it.
Because the lines are part of the text, they stay when you paste the text somewhere else. The two Discord lines at the bottom of the list are different: they use Discord's markdown, ~~text~~ and __text__, which Discord turns into formatting when you send the message.
Things to know before you paste it
- Each letter becomes two characters, so the text counts double against a character limit.
- Some fonts draw the line in the wrong place or leave gaps between letters.
- Screen readers often skip the lines, so a listener won't know the text is crossed out. Don't use it for anything a reader must not miss, such as an old price.
- Search may not match crossed-out text to the plain words.
Strikethrough in Word and Google Docs
Word processors have their own strikethrough formatting, which is easier to edit than these characters. In Google Docs, select the text and press Alt+Shift+5 on Windows or ⌘+Shift+X on a Mac. In Microsoft Word, select the text and press the abc button with a line through it in the Font group on the Home tab.
