How to raise or lower part of the text

The first line of the list reads the same marks a calculator or LaTeX uses:

• ^ raises what comes after it: x^2 gives x², and 10^-3 gives 10⁻3, so use braces for more than one character.
• _ lowers what comes after it: H_2O gives H₂O and CO_2 gives CO₂.
• A run of digits moves together, so 2^10 gives 2¹⁰.
• Braces move a longer group: x^{n+1} gives xⁿ⁺¹ and a_{ij} gives aᵢⱼ.

The other two lines turn all the text into superscript or subscript.

What Unicode can raise and lower

Superscript ¹, ² and ³ come from the Latin-1 block of Unicode, and the other digits and signs come from the Superscripts and Subscripts block. Because they were added at different times, some fonts draw ¹²³ at a slightly different height from ⁴⁵⁶.

When to use real formatting instead

Word, Google Docs and HTML have proper superscript and subscript formatting, which works for any character at any size. In HTML, use <sup> and <sub>. Use the characters from this page where you can't format text, such as social posts, chat messages, spreadsheet cells and file names.
