Random letter generator
Press Generate to pick a random letter from A to Z. Ask for more letters to get a list, and narrow the choice to vowels, consonants or a range such as A to M.
How the letters are picked
Each letter in the chosen set has the same chance of coming up. The page uses your browser's random number generator, so the result can't be predicted and nothing is sent anywhere. With "No repeats" on, the set is shuffled like a deck of cards and dealt from the top, so each letter appears at most once. The whole alphabet then gives at most 26 letters, and the vowels give 5.
The big letter at the top is the first letter of the list, so you can show it on a screen in a classroom or a game.
Ways to use a random letter
- Word games: pick a letter for Scattergories, "name a thing that starts with…" or a round of categories.
- Teaching: practise letter names and sounds, or pick a letter of the week.
- Drawing and writing: pick a letter and draw or write something that starts with it.
- Testing: make random letter strings for a form, a search box or a sort order.
For whole words, use the random noun and adjective generator.
