Upside down text generator

Type to turn your text upside down, then copy it into a message, a bio or a comment. The first line flips the letters and reverses their order, so it reads correctly when someone turns their phone around.

How upside down text works

There is no upside down font. Each letter is swapped for a Unicode character that looks like it turned over: a becomes ɐ, e becomes ǝ, h becomes ɥ and t becomes ʇ. Some letters already look the same upside down, such as o, s, x and z, and some swap with another letter, such as b and q or d and p. Because these are ordinary characters, the text keeps its look when you paste it anywhere that takes plain text.

The page gives four versions:

• Upside down: flipped and reversed, so it reads from left to right after a 180° turn.
• Upside down, same order: each letter flipped but left in its place.
• Backwards: the letters in reverse order, not flipped.
• Mirror: reversed, with each letter flipped left to right. The mirror text generator has more on it.

Letters that don't flip well

Unicode has no turned form for every character, so a few use the closest look-alike. Capital letters are the weakest: some use rare characters that older phones may show as boxes. Digits use similar shapes, for example 3 becomes Ɛ and 7 becomes ㄥ. Accented letters, emoji and characters from other alphabets stay as they are.

How to write upside down in Word

To turn text upside down in a Word document, insert a text box, type the text in it, and drag the round arrow on top of the box to turn it 180°. In Word for Windows you can also set an exact angle under Shape Format, Rotate. Use this page when you need the text itself turned, such as in a message.
